A COT
Goverment House,
Hongkong, 3rd. September, 1902.

I have the honour to inform you that the
Head Bailiff of the Supreme Court has hitherto been in the
habit of receiving, not in his public capacity but as a private individual, certain fees paid by the Official Receiver in bankruptcy for services rendered by the Head Bailiff in con- nection with the temporary custody and management of goods and
stocks in trade belonging to bankrupt estates.
2.
The average annual amount of these feas
varies between about $280 and $540, out of which the Head Bailiff requires to meet considerable out of pocket expenses.
On an average he draws about $125 a year nett.
3.
As the work done by the Head Bailiff in
this connection is no part of his ordinary duty and is en-
trusted to him merely because he is the most suitable man,
see no objection to the continuance of the practice for which
I have to ask for your formal approval.
I
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.,

I have the honour to be, Sir,
Your most obedient
Humble servant,
M.J. Gascoigne
Major-General,
Administering the Goverment.
